SCDSB Facility Standing Committee Mar. 3, 2010
At the March 3rd Facility Standing Committee, there was a delegation from Georgian Meadows area parents. The focus of the deputation was the issue of over-capacity and long term student numbers at Mountain View ES, as detailed within the AAR-Collingwood staff recommendation.
The delegation suggested that the Georgian Meadows student body be moved to Admiral Collingwood P.S. until a more viable long term solution can be found. ( see delegation pdf below).
The concerns voiced should be reflected on. The student population at Mountain View will drop under the proposal from approx. 139% of school capacity in 2010-11 to 118% in 2011-12 ( inclusive of county special education classes). It is accurate that the other schools, given the current recommendation, will result in the following capacity utilization : Admiral Collingwood 88%, Cameron St. PS 88%, Connaught PS 83%.
If the county gifted class was moved from Mountain View ES to Connaught PS the capacity utilization numbers would change to Mountain View at 108% and Connaught 94%.
It should be noted that parents with children in the gifted program asked on a number of occasions whether the county class at Mountain View would be moved. In response to a question from the floor at the last AAR meeting on Feb. 2, 2010, school board staff stated that there was no plan to do so in the immediate future.
